What 14 mm and 16 mm actually measure
People often search for this as pickleball paddle core thickness. In production, the 14 mm or 16 mm specification is treated as the nominal paddle-body thickness across the hitting area: face laminate, core and face laminate. It does not describe the grip.

Which thickness should you choose?

Two thicknesses make sense when the matched samples show a difference that is easy to explain and worth the extra tooling checks, sample control, model records and inventory. If the distinction disappears once weight and face are matched, a second SKU adds complexity without adding a clear product role.
A fair 14/16 test is a matched-pair test

Thickness is a model field, not an approval shortcut
USA Pickleball's current Equipment Standards Manual does not set a general paddle-thickness limit. It does require paddles used in sanctioned play to meet the equipment requirements and to appear as an approved model.[1]
UPA-A's current paddle rules are more explicit: paddle thickness is a structural variation, and an Approved Model cannot contain structural variations under the same model number. The approved-paddle list also shows thickness by model.[2] If a project needs both 14 mm and 16 mm versions for regulated play, confirm the model and submission requirements before packaging and artwork are locked.
