How Pickleball Paddles Are Made and Tested in a Hot-Press Factory

A hot-pressed pickleball paddle moves through face-sheet preparation, structural assembly, molding, edge finishing, printing, edge-guard fitting, final finishing and testing. The photos below document those 10 steps on Mozkuib's production line.

Before a paddle reaches the press, its face sheets, core and handle structure are already assembled. After molding come edge finishing, printing, the edge guard, final finishing and factory checks.

The 10-step hot-press pickleball paddle manufacturing process

Preparation
Cutting pickleball paddle face sheets to the required outline
STEP 01

Cut the face sheets

Face sheets are cut to the required paddle outline before they are assembled with the core and handle structure.

Wiping the surface of pickleball paddle face sheets before assembly
STEP 02

Prepare and clean the face sheets

The surface of each face sheet is wiped before assembly. Edge sanding happens later, after molding.

Assembling pickleball paddle face sheets, core and handle structure
STEP 03

Assemble the paddle structure

The face sheets, core and handle structure are aligned and assembled before the paddle enters the mold.

Hot pressing and edge finishing
Hot-press molding a pickleball paddle
STEP 04

Form the paddle in the mold

The assembled structure is placed in the mold and formed under controlled heat and pressure. For the process shown here, the hot-press molding stage is the thermoforming step.

Sanding and smoothing the edge of a molded pickleball paddle
STEP 05

Finish the edges

After molding, excess material and burrs are removed. The perimeter is sanded flat and smooth so the edge guard can sit cleanly around the paddle later.

Printing and final assembly

STEP 06

Print the approved artwork

Artwork is printed after the paddle body has been formed and the perimeter finished. Position and color are checked against the approved sample before the edge guard is fitted.

Fitting the edge guard around a pickleball paddle
STEP 07

Fit the edge guard

The edge guard is fitted around the finished perimeter. A smooth, even edge from Step 5 helps the guard sit evenly around the paddle.

Final finishing and packing of a pickleball paddle
STEP 08

Finish and pack the paddle

After the edge guard is fitted, the paddle is checked for printing, color, edge condition and visible finish, then labeled and packed.

Testing
Deflection test on a finished pickleball paddle
STEP 09

Run the deflection test

Finished paddles are sampled for deflection. The sampling plan depends on the model and order.

Swing and surface-friction checks on finished pickleball paddles
STEP 10

Check swing and surface friction

Sampling may also include swing and surface-friction checks.

Final production checks

Across the batch, routine checks include weight, dimensions, thickness, construction, artwork, color and edge condition. Instrument checks such as deflection, swing and surface friction are sampled according to the model and order.

Testing note

Factory sampling and formal certification are different. USA Pickleball's current manufacturer test plan includes paddle dimensions, coefficient of friction, deflection, reflection/gloss and roughness. See the current paddle test plan.
